Play with Meaning

How to play

1. Set out all category cards face-up on a table. Each player begins by picking 10 cards from the shared pool. Exchanges are always allowed. The goal is to build a card pyramid โ€œof meaningsโ€.
2. One player begins to build the team pyramid. Each player starts off by picking the base that they can build a triangle with at least two other cards. The base card must be able to be the subject of the next card or two cards (the subject of a claim or of conceptual relations). Ex: โ€œParrotsโ€ can build a triangle with โ€œCanโ€ + โ€œSingโ€
3. Begin the pyramid by placing a right and left card on top of the base card to create an apex.
This base card + other card(s) must represent something meaningful, then the next base +  two cards must also transfer information, lead to, imply, or offer an abstraction, inference or a synthesis of what was beneath it.  Ex: โ€œParrots can sing โ€œ may be linked to โ€œStochastic parrotโ€ as the next base card. Whoever plays cards must explain aloud how cards follow from one another/how they transfer meaning while maintaining the same sense throughout the interpretation.
4. Other players may challenge the interpretation. They may propose alternative interpretations, add nuances, or offer reasons to reject the transfer of meaningful information or the relations. The group discusses.
5. Pyramid building ends when a single apex is reached joining everyoneโ€™s pyramids or playing in unity to build one pyramid together. The apex cards must represent a synthesis of all below it.
6. The final pyramid is interpreted collaboratively. Players take turns telling the story, concepts, culture, conclusions, humor, logic, or system they see. Alternative readings are encouraged. Bonus if it collapses from being too big!
Meow-mi is a game about the process of inferring meaning: how we assign it, challenge it, and stumble upon it.

It rewards elegance of interpretation, sharpness of falsification, and the ability to see signs through the lenses of logic, culture, and society. Stabilize the unstable.
